Small businesses claim a 100% deduction on artworks purchased for display within your business
Thanks to changes to the rules around tax deductions, the ATO allows small businesses to claim an immediate 100% tax deduction at the end of each financial year on any artworks purchased for display within your business. You may decide to hang the works anywhere where they will improve your working environment.
This deduction falls under the ATOâs simplified depreciation rules, allowing small businesses to claim a 100% deduction rather than adhering to a regular depreciation schedule. At this stage these special rules are due to end on 30th June 2018, so this means you only have a few weeks left to make your qualifying purchase of some contemporary art. You can purchase and claim as many artworks as you wish, just as long as each individual artwork has been hung within your business before 30th June 2018 and each piece does not exceed $20,000.
Be sure to seek your own financial and tax advice to ensure your small business is able to claim this immediate 100% tax deduction.

Art Bazaar Speers Point Park a success today!
Massive thank you to everyone who stopped by at today’s Hunter Arts Networks’ Art Bazaar at Speers Point! We were in a new area at Speers Point Park for the first time which proved to be a great location, great stall layout and we had fantastic weather. It was an enjoyable & entertaining day and all round good atmosphere. I also sold two of my paintings. Itâs great to know that the local quality creativity on offer is greatly appreciated and that all sales are going back into our local community to help artists continue their wonderful work. See you in August at Art Bazaar Pop Up @ The Levee during Maitland Aroma!

Art Bazaar Speers Point 2018 – NEW DATE
Come and see my and my paintings for sale at Hunter Arts Network’s Art Bazaar at Speers Point Park on Sunday 22 April 2018 from 10am â 3pm. The event was postponed in March as Speers Point Park had to be closed due to the wet weather.
My stall will have a yellow canopy. My paintings start at $10, I have unframed, framed and on canvas available. At Art Bazaar there will also be music, food and coffee. Heather Scott is living her dream.For the past 12 years the coffee lover, artist and mother-of-two has had an idea brewing away in the back of her mind. Why not combine all her passions in the one business?
And so The Stubborn Scorpio Cafe and Art House was born. The funky little cafe opened in July at what was formerly known as The Mosh Pit on Cardiffâs Main Road.
âIt was a matter of opportunity and timing,â Scott told Food & Wine.
âI had been working at The Mosh Pit for three years as a barista when my boss decided to sell the cafe part of her business. I couldnât stand the idea of a stranger coming in and possibly destroying the heart and soul of the place.
âI also didnât like my chances of finding another job I loved as much as this one.â
She has âspent her entire working lifeâ in hospitality.
âStraight out of school I started at the Newcastle University Union where for the next 10 years I did every kind of food and beverage job there was,â she explained.
âI had a seven-year break when I had my children and The Mosh Pit came along when I was desperate to find myself again after being a single parent for so many years. It saved me. I hope I can create something just as special and important for someone else.â
The food offering is a collaboration with a friend and talented cook.
âWe brainstorm ideas constantly. We are very much on the same wavelength and love food made from scratch that is healthy and delicious.â
The Stubborn Scorpio has a set breakfast and lunch menu but all sorts of specials can pop up on the cafeâs Facebook page without warning. The takeaway hummus and vegetable sticks, for example, have been popular at $5 a tub.
âWe are certainly not a vegan-only cafe however the demand is growing and we love to provide a variety of options,â Scott said.
The cafe is as much about supporting the local arts community as it is about good coffee and food. Artists can exhibit their works in the in-house gallery and many are offered for sale.
âWe display and sell artworks of all types from exclusively local artists,â she said.
âThese people are our customers, friends of friends or people who live down the road. I wanted to provide an outlet for artists, for people who are trying to turn a hobby into a career. To give someone a start.â
