Newcastle visual artist Margo Humphries launches Turn Clothing Co. clothing brand

LIKE many kids, Margo Humphries loved painting and did as much as she could within her means.

“I didn’t get a lot of pocket money but I won a lot of kids’ drawing competitions,” she says.

“I remember keeping an exercise book of all the prizes that I had won, and it was in the hundreds.”

Now Humphries, an experienced visual artist with multiple group and solo exhibitions under her belt and a member of the Hunter Arts Network, is trading her acrylic paints and ink for graphic design.

She’s launched Turn Clothing Co, a made-to-order online clothing label that has released a range of T-shirts and apparel.

“I am revealing another side that has been itching to come out for a few years. Both disciplines inspire each other – design learns from art and art learns from the design,” she says.

“I’m drawn to designs that aren’t heavy, I can relate to fun and bright Newy life. This new project amplifies summer threads and beach apparel.”

Humphries, who moved to the Hunter from Taree in 2003 and has been painting professionally since 2008, says the move to start the label came upon demand.

“A lot of people commented that they liked the patterns in my work and that they would look good on material so although I haven’t yet gone down that path, I’ve started,” she says.

Local scenes inspire Humphries, from Lansdown escarpment in her home town of Taree to coastal water scenes in the Hunter. A fan of artists including Salvador Dali and Geoffrey Smart, Humphries is happiest when she leaves her day job and gets back to the paints.

Her decision to use German-headquartered T-shirt manufacturing company Spreadshirt for her production is based on her desire to lower overheads while ramping up her designs.

She designs prints on a computer then uploads it to the Spreadshirt site for printing and manufacturing before they can be ordered, either via Spreadshirt or her own site.

“Eventually I would love to be able to have my stock,” she adds, “and send it out directly and do it all myself.”

She enjoys the process of designing a print and the fact she can step away and return to it after a few days and change it completely or revise it in her own time.

Turn Clothing Co sponsors 12-year-old Sydneysiders Archie Perkin and Luka Latinovic who recently had their first taste of surfing competitions with Maroubra Surfers Association.

“They contacted me and though they are not from the Hunter I thought it would be good to support them and get my designs out there,” she said.

  • Art Bazaar Lambton Park Sunday 18 November 2018

I am having a stall at this year’s Hunter Arts Network’s Christmas Art Bazaar at Lambton Park which is Sponsored by Mayfield and Industrial Drive McDonald’s Community Grant. There will be approximately 60 stalls, mine will have the yellow canopy. The event will also feature food, coffee and entertainment. I will be selling my paintings and also giving away a complimentary large gloss vinyl Turn Clothing Co sticker with each of my paintings sold (one per person).

Art Bazaar has been Newcastle’s essential Christmas shopping destination since 2002. Hunter Arts Network’s fourth Art Bazaar at Lambton Park is being held on Sunday 18 November 2018 from 9am – 3pm. Lambton Park is located on the Corner of Howe & Morehead Sts, Lambton, so Art Bazaar will be surrounded by beautiful parklands & great scenery. Lambton is a densely populated residential area located around some of Newcastle’s main roads making it a convenient suburb for transport. Art Bazaar is also within easy walking distance from many cafes and venues, including the new Lambton Park Tea Rooms, Lambton Park Hotel, and more.

  • Small businesses claim a 100% deduction on artworks purchased for display within your business

Thanks to changes to the rules around tax deductions, the ATO allows small businesses to claim an immediate 100% tax deduction at the end of each financial year on any artworks purchased for display within your business. You may decide to hang the works anywhere where they will improve your working environment.

This deduction falls under the ATO’s simplified depreciation rules, allowing small businesses to claim a 100% deduction rather than adhering to a regular depreciation schedule. At this stage these special rules are due to end on 30th June 2018, so this means you only have a few weeks left to make your qualifying purchase of some contemporary art. You can purchase and claim as many artworks as you wish, just as long as each individual artwork has been hung within your business before 30th June 2018 and each piece does not exceed $20,000.

Be sure to seek your own financial and tax advice to ensure your small business is able to claim this immediate 100% tax deduction.

  • ART BAZAAR POSTPONED THIS SUNDAY

Hunter Arts Network regrets to advise that Speers Point Park will be closed this weekend due to the wet weather which means Art Bazaar is unable to go ahead this Sunday 25 March 2018. Whilst Sunday could be a fine day, Lake Macquarie City Council is very concerned about people’s safety and the condition of their grounds as their parks will not have had the opportunity to dry out. We will advise the rescheduled date asap. We apologise for the inconvenience. Yours sincerely, Hunter Arts Network
